Horseman of War, Ares

Just minutes had passed since Beelzebub and Letum left to go find Joan. Pacing the Prince’s living room, Ares turned to Adelaide. “This is all your fault,” he spat at her.

Adelaide’s brow furrowed. “How is this my fault?”

Ares groaned and sat down next to Adelaide on the plush oversized couch. “Without you, I would not be stuck here, babysitting. Instead, I would be out there, helping clean up the mess I made!”

“What exactly happened to cause all of this? What is happening?” Adelaide asked, and he could tell she was genuinely lost about everything happening. Ares watched as Adelaide tried to calm the torrent occurring in her head, and she then grabbed her head with both hands, her eyes clamping shut. As she did so, Ares placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Are you okay?” Ares asked, genuinely, ignoring her other questions. Beneath the burly, angry exterior, he was exceptionally kind. “I didn’t mean to snap at you… I wish I could be doing more.”

Adelaide nodded and dropped her hands, her gaze traveling to his hand on her shoulder. The sheer size of his hand covered her shoulder and most of her upper arm as well. That hand had centuries of experience, and Adelaide could tell by the calluses she felt on her skin.

Meeting his eyes, she said, “I’m sorry you are stuck here babysitting me. There’s just been a lot to happen lately, and I am still processing everything.”

Ares looked away, pulling his hand back. “Want to talk about it?”

She nodded before saying, oh so eloquently, “I, uh, I think I am now one of you guys,” she said.

Cocking his head to the side, he asked, “What do you mean?” But his eyes widened, and the realization hit before she said anything. “Wait, how did that happen? Are you… are you Famine now?”

Taking a deep breath, she nodded, sucking her bottom lip in between her teeth. “Beelzebub and I fought,” she paused as Ares inhaled sharply.

Ares stopped pacing, something he didn’t even realize he had started again and tilted his head. “He lets you refer to him by his name?”

“He always has; he didn’t want me to think of him as any different from anyone else,” Adelaide responded.

After a moment, and what felt like fleeting jealousy passing over Ares, he said, “Continue. So you fought?”

Adelaide looked down. “Yeah, it was over… privacy.”

“So you found out about one of his favorite pastimes?” Ares asked, looking at her in earnest. “It’s a lot to take in. It was when he told me about it as well.”

“How many people know about that?” Adelaide asked.

“Only the horsemen. And now you. But I guess you are one of us now. Sorry, one track mind trying to become two. Continue with your story,” Ares said, leaning back on the couch.

“Right. So, after the fight, I went home and bumped into Jasper on the way. I found out that he had been trying to court Joan, and that one was, well, surprising. After thinking things through, I decided I wanted to apologize to Beelzebub.
